    To give you an idea of sales costs/effort consider this:

    To get 50 people into a seminar you need to mailshot at least 1000 with the appropriate costs involved there.
    Then you need telemarketing effort following on from the mailshots. Look at approx £250/day.
    Once you have a list from that, expect a lot of dropouts on the day. Plus of course the expense of running the seminar.
    Then, expect a very low sales figure on that seminar so, if you make one sale from that, it should soak up the costs (approx £4-5K) plus the normal costs of running the business.

    Alternatively, you could hire a freelance salesman which would cost about £350/day + commission and expenses. Of course, they need to fully understand what it is you offer so you would preferably productize your offerings.

    Pain in the ass eh?

    Older and ...well, just older!!

      This is something I am seriously considering for the future. I think the safest option is to start the consultancy using contractors on an engagement by engagement basis, and as success builds start to take on fresh graduates as permies.
