The main benefit is that nowadays, people don't believe you exist unless you've got a website.

If you're not a design bunny, a well-detailed entry on LinkedIn (which will get picked up by google) is better than some half-hacked website.

worked for me. i started it as a business on my own account thing and then lo a client called me up! be nice if i could get them to pay me though

Certainly is! I've had numerous jobs come in via my website.
