    Contracting in Johannesburg

Anyone have any experience of working in Johannesburg?

Looking for the usual...what's it like, costs, etc etc

Never contracted in Johnasburg but I've got family out there and visit them regularly.

There is no way that I would work out there. There are ceertain parts of the city that are no-go even in the day and when I was out there my uncle prefered to drive through red lights and get the tickets than stop and get fecked over.

Other parts of the city though are brilliant.

I'd definatly try before you buy and spend a week out there before you sign - its not for everyone.

A lot of pluses to living there but the violence outweights them all in my view. I had quite a few English mates living over there and have visted quite a few times but they have all gradually come home due to the violence. The last hangers on just got held up at gun point a few months ago with the kids in tow and are now leaving. Other parts are better than Joburg security wise but its still dodgy if you are used to the UK. Rates used to be poor ( but cost of living equally low ) but a bit out of the loop these days.

Working in Johannesburg is not all bad. There are dodgy parts and very dodgy parts but some areas aren't too bad. I assume that the position won't actually be in the city itself - more likely in the northern suburbs of Sandton, Randburg or Midrand.

Make sure you get accommodation near the office though - traffic in the north is insane.
