You don't know what arrangements he negotiated, prior to signing the contract, or do you?

Depends whether you are the person responsible or not.

Usually a perm is responsible, not a contractor.
I would help, maybe offer some advice, but, running your BAU is not my concern.

If your project is going down the cr@pper and everyone shouts "it clearly states in my contract in sub section 3.1.5 that your crisis is nothing to do with me" you're not going to get much in the way of repeat business - maybe that is because I lead stuff like this rather than work in it, but still, I'd expect a level of engagement in a project environment from everyone.

It's different if its BAU crap of course, but within the realms of a project stuff goes wrong (sometimes that is regularly down to one person) and the client can surely expect some professional responsibility to be taken by a project team without someone shouting "D&C ALERT! RUN LADS!"

psychocandy - have a word with him/her first to tell em to sort their own mess out, or at the very least stay away from your area of delivery, then make a broad comment to management regarding "so and so being at the centre of ANOTHER cock up...." and if that doesn't stick get more pointed in requesting idiot1 comes and sort his own mess out next time he/she drops a clanger.

Apart from that there ain't much more you can do that what you already are.

And just think - it's better than being at the job centre.

Project v BAU - exactly why I went contracting. Why build something in a 12-18 month project and sit there waiting for it to break (BAU) for two years when it won't? Move on to the next project. I'd always choose projects over BAU and if BAU aren't pulling their weight, that should be a perm/FTC issue.

As a contractor - presumably in a large organisation - you are not simply paid to do stuff.

True, you do have to write code, deliver projects and that sort of thing. However to think that is enough is to miss the whole point of human existence.

Any professional worthy of the name will take time and loving care to spread blame as elegantly and widely as possible and will stitch people up at any hint of an opportunity.

Your question should have been more along the lines of "I'm busy luring some other contractor into a trap that will see him stuffed (because he doesn't give me proper RESPECK) - any advice on how I should do some warehousing/reporting bits and bobs I need to do in the meantime?"

Focus on the important things. If you are genuinely a complete novice, then start by eg picking on some mistake or 'question' and ask him for clarification at the same time as copying the email to a judiciously ever widening circle of influential people. You don't need to go on the attack, just to start shining lights. He sounds as though he could easily be the agent of his own downfall.

And of course speak badly of him whenever possible, preferably in a queue when his boss's boss is right behind you.

I never get involved in this normally and I'm the last person ever to dob someone in.

BUT this one guy a clientco really takes the piss. Hes constantly jumping in changing stuff. It goes wrong then no-one knows where he is and he hasn't even told anyone whats going on.

Normally I don't care. If client wants my opinion then they can have it but they retain other contractors so its nothing to do with me how they behave.

Its getting to the point where its causing grief now. I end up working late to sort out cock-ups.

Management appear to know what this guys like but tolerate him.

So, follow him to the toilets and give him a good kicking?

Sod that for a game of soldiers. If someone is taking the piss (and I mean taking it) Id have no hesitation about bringing it to someone's attention.

Shoddy work reflects badly on all the contractors in the affected area and I dont want to be spending my time clearing up some shoddy contractor's crap.

People who say just carry on, clean up the rubbish and keep invoicing are missing the point totally.

To be honest, I'm the last person in the world to drop someone in it. I hate people who backstab and make themselves look good.

I know some of you may think I'm a tit but I'm a nice guy really! :-)

Known for a while about this guy and have kept quiet. I've had quiet words with him and tried to explain.

But hes carried on as before and still does it.

Now his mistakes are overflowing into everything else. Its gone too far. Hes had every opportunity to at least try to make things easier for everyone else but he just can't be arsed.

But it seems it has been noticed and I got asked for my opinion today. I don't like doing it but I had no choice. We'll see what happens....
