What had happened on this memorable Monday, which both sides, Britain and the EU, wanted to mark as a date of success in their calendars? Believing in British newspapers, the compromise between May and EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was almost agreed when Arlene Foster called from Belfast and forced May to leave her host behind for lunch. When she returned after half an hour, she literally took the deal off the table. Juncker was disappointed when he later went to the press and called his guest a "tough negotiator" with a mixture of resignation and subtle irony.

Foster is one of the very few who are allowed to disturb the Prime Minister at any time. Without the chairman of the DUP, which has ten members in the British House of Commons, May could not govern, at least not with a stable majority. When Foster formulates an objection, the question of power always resonates. And it was far more than an objection the Belfast woman had to file on Monday.
