MPs and getting s58 retro side removed

Is it worth considering engaging a lobbyist to aid the cause of persuading MPs to do the right thing here, and dump retro-S58? Would the suggested fund for a PR campaign perhaps be better spent on such a venture?

Oh and Hector, if you're watching: F*** YOU!!
Lord Clyde in 1929: ‘No man is under the smallest obligation, moral or other, so to arrange his legal relations to his business or to his property as to enable the Revenue to put the largest possible shovel into his stores. The Revenue is not slow to take every advantage which is open to it under the taxing statutes for the purpose of depleting the taxpayer’s pocket. And the taxpayer is entitled to be astute to prevent, so far as he honestly can, the depletion of his means by the Revenue.’

            Long time lurker here...

Only on the scheme for 1 year so liability is limited but still a significant amount.

Have written to the treasury committee and received the same response as everyone else who posted.

Also wrote to my MP - Alistair Darling (!) for what it's worth.

Not sure if this has come up before, but has anyone thought of an e-petition? 100,000 votes gets a parliamentary debate on the issue - if even half of the 3000 people get signatures from 70 friends/family each then we're there:

            HM Government e-petitions

Not accusing anyone of this, but it would be very easy for HMRC to plant a stooge on this forum to get what they wanted.
Specifically why I've been very quiet of late, nothing concrete to add so why stir it up. Let the mp guys get on with the job, I've got nothing Factual to add

                    "Dear Mr XXXXXX

Thank you for writing to the Treasury Committee. As you may have seen, Andrew Tyrie MP, Chairman of the Treasury Committee, made the following comments regarding retrospective taxation:

“Can retrospection be reconciled with the certainty a tax system needs in order to deliver an efficient economy? A simpler, more stable and fairer tax system is less likely to excite demands for retrospection.

"Any action the Government takes on this is likely to be something the Committee would want to look at as part of our study into the Budget.”

The Chairman’s comments were prompted by the actions HMRC took with regard to Barclays. This follows on from work the Committee previously undertook on the principles of tax policy.

I am sorry to hear about the distress caused to you by the changes introduced by Section 58 of the Finance Act 2008. I will ensure your concerns are drawn to the attention of the Members of the Committee. The Committee has not announced a specific inquiry into retrospective taxation but may look at this subject as part of its forthcoming work on the 2012 Budget. Your email will be useful background material to any work the Committee undertakes in this area.

Thank you for taking the trouble to write to the Committee.

                    Yours sincerely

                    Phil Jones
