If the accountant is registered with either ACA, ACCA or CIMA etc, then if he's fallen down in his duties, threatening to report him to his institute for malpractice might convince him to help sort the mess out. If he's an unqualified one man band type operation, then it's basically tough. I can see why the ICAEW and ACCA want the term 'accountant' to be given the same protected status as solicitor sometimes. -
