Nice one Gordon.

In case anyone wants to plagiarise - here's what I sent:
    Great letter.

Anyone who is going to face severe hardship over this should write to their MP now and tell them. Using retrospective laws to make hundreds of people insolvent, homeless and/or cause family breakdowns etc. are the actions of a fascist state.

Don't delay, write to your MP now.

Letter also sent to George Osborne

Letter sent to shadow chancellor with the additional phrase:

Myself and thousands of others in this situation are prospective Conservative voters, so I hope I can count on your support on this issue. I felt you should be made aware of what is happening to decent law abiding people like myself and I would be truly grateful if you could perhaps raise this issue in the House Of Commons.

I would recommend everyone to write (in your own words) to Mr Osborne, even if he is not your MP!!!

Just forfeit a few silly posts on here and use the energy to construct a few letters.

It can't do any harm but technically he only has to respond to his own constituents.

Message to anyone who hasn't written to their MP yet:

If the Government is going to bankrupt you, don't you think you should make the effort to complain to your MP who after all is paid to represent you?

I think the potential new chancellor of the exchequer should be very(how do you underline something 3 times ) interested in our case. If he's not, hes not worth voting for!

C'mon guys and girls. Only 8 people have written so far!!!

            Writing to your MP

I sent a letter to the MP for Lambeth, Kate Hoey, at the start of September through http://www.writetothem.com and, unsurprisingly have yet to hear anything back. I've just forwarded my letter directly to her parliament address and will try calling up her office if I don't hear anything. I don't expect her to support me but at least I can put across the point of how ill considered this piece of legislation is. Come on lets get some more people on the case.

I have just written to my MP again. Feel free to plagiarize.

Re: Retrospective Legislation - Clause 55, Finance Bill 2008

I would like to thank you for your letter dated 24th June 2008, and for raising the matter with Rt Hon Jane Kennedy MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury. If possible, I would like to bring this to your attention once more.

Now that the Finance Bill has passed into law, HMRC have begun issuing closure notices. Although the legislation was originally cited against property developers, the vast majority of people affected by it are, like myself, freelance workers. My enquiries indicates that as many as 2000 such individuals may be caught up in this.

I can appreciate the government’s desire to clamp down on tax avoidance, and perhaps they even feel justified in making an example of people who use these arrangements. However, the majority of people affected by this particular legislation are not wealthy individuals. Although this will obviously impact me personally, I have taken steps to try and protect myself and my family. Many others are not able to afford this luxury. I am in contact with a group of people in the same predicament, and a substantial number are facing insolvency, repossession and family breakdown.

Maybe, in hindsight, I was naïve to enter into such an arrangement but at the time (May 2001) I was advised by a leading Tax Counsel that it was a perfectly legal way to organise my affairs. HMRC first opened enquiries on my tax returns in November 2003. In numerous correspondence I received from HMRC over the past 5 years, they stated that it was their intention to litigate against my claim for double taxation relief but of course this never happened.

My legal advisors have recommended that I appeal against the HMRC closure notice on the grounds that retrospective legislation infringes my human rights. They are also applying to the High Court for a Judicial Review. However, if their endeavours ultimately prove unsuccessful, the fallout and human cost of this could be disastrous for many families.

I hope I can count on your continued support to oppose this retrospective legislation.
