Student Loans - Rebate given in error

So currently on the phone to the SLC.

I paid off my student loans in Feb 2019.
In July I got a letter saying I overpaid and have a rebate of just over 2k owed to me. Happy days.

    Fast forward today.
Got an email from HMRC saying my student loans account has been moved to the gov.uk website.

Thought, eh! I paid it off. So logged on. Got 2k outstanding.

Called SLC - They said HMRC made an error in paying me the rebate so that have added it back onto my SLC for me to pay back.
And have at no point notified me. Its been almost a year and half.
If I want to escalate I need to call HMRC direct. So I asked what number....SLC said google it, we cant give out the number.

SO when you google HMRC Student Loans Company it comes up with...you guessed it the number for student loans company.
I ask SLC to send me an email with this info, they dont send out emails.
I have had to take a recording of the phone call!

    Any suggestions

Go down the SLC complaints process.

Are you disputing that there is a payment due and that's why you need to talk to HMRC? Tweet them to get the number: @HMRCcustomers

Tried that, they said its nothing to do with them. Take it up with HMRC...but refused to give me a contact number!
SLC have effectively washed their hands with it.

Not a bad idea, might need to get on twitter again.

I am not disputing the payment per se.

              I want to know:
1 - if they c*cked up and paid me the rebate in error, why should I pay them back
2a - Its been over a hear and half, how can they just add it back to my SLC without notifying me.
2b - I have never been notified, why wasnt I?

Indeed, tell them you spent on on a holiday and whistle for it

Because it was an error and it's not your money.

Isn't there some "thing" whereby if a refund was made in error and you, as the recipient, genuinely didn't realise an error had been made and spent the quids, you can keep the cash? It's not like the SLC doesn't have form for being utterly rubbish at managing loans with millions owed in refunds for overpayment.
