    Laptop: Dust trapped behind screen

I use a laptop with an external keyboard, mouse and monitor and very occasionally use it as a 'proper' laptop when away from my desk and never travel with it.

The other day, I opened the lid and noticed some dust on the screen which looks like the dust attracted by static.

It was in a 'pile' near the top of the screen but when I tried to wipe it away it just spread out a bit.

Upon closer inspection, it appears as if the dust is actually inside the screen!

It's not a big problem as, as mentioned, I mainly use the laptop with external peripherals but wondered if anyone has had a similar scenario. If so, how did you resolve it?

The laptop is 18 months old, in excellent condition and still under (extended) warranty so was debating whether to log a call with the manufacturer.

yes log a call with the manufacturer - HP (for instance) have great service generally arrange a collection next day and have it back to you within 8 days

Dell generally come out to you - similar arrangement and sometimes they bring the parts and fix i there and then.

What make/model of laptop is it?

It may be possible to disassemble the lid/screen and get the dust out

Samsung Q320 - looks like I'm not alone.

Still not sure if its worth pursuing.

          depending how adventurous you are...

Those 4 rubber feet which cushion the screen when closed probably hide the screws which hold the lid together. Pop the rubber feet off and then you can take the lid apart and hopefully clear the dust out

Cheers SC - will have a think about it.

I searched the Notebook Review forum linked to above for a service manual but no luck - would be handy if things go wrong.

Sounds like a faulty seal around the screen edge. If your warranty wont cover it, which many wont and only cover dead pixels over a certain percentage, then look below .......

If you can get to it, hold a hoover to all four corners to help suck the dust out, then use electrical tape to seal the edges a bit better. Then put the lid plastics back on ...

Apart from that, I wouldnt diassamble it, fiddling around with the screen layers is tricky and time consuming. Instead get a replacement off ebay for under £50. Plug in the inverter, job done.

                  Thanks chaps.

Will take a closer look at the w/end before deciding how to proceed.
