    should i stay or should i go

    PM in a contract at the moment....the project is going terribly due to poor technical design and lack of thought on how it was actually going to work.....the end customer is asking me loads of questions...and each time i am having to say - i'll get back to you, as i know the underlying design issue hasn't been sorted....

    I hate constantly being battered by the end customer over these problems ....
    contract is due to finish soon....but the project is unlikely to finish until july.....do I stick it out for a renewal or go elsewhere?

    the money is good, the people is good, the working practice is good - work from home with odd meetings at company.

    appreicate some opinions...

    If the project is going bad then why are you sure there will be a renewal? Are you in charge of the nderlying technical side of things? If so then fix it if not them tell the client xyz are not doing as told and kick some ass to fix it.

      hmm

      no I am not in charge of the technical side of things....but technical enough to spot the problems and understand....my problem is there isn't a tech design bod for me to say: "oi fix it"

      Its been escalated towards senior management already...but as always decision is slow....

      true on the contract renewal thing....get my CV out there soon.....it may get canned...

          I don't get this.

          The project is expected to finish in July.

          But the detailed design hasn't been done yet.

          And the company is so lacking in specialist resources that it has to engage the services of a freelance PM.

          Either this is a really micky-mouse project, or IMHO the company is going to fail to deliver.

            Not necessarily a Mickey Mouse project... there are a lot of unforseen technical issues that can interfere with the best planned project. I worked on a 2 year project which started out well, but it was so complex that it ended up being a complete mess. The NHS project is one classic example.

              Well all ethics aside, if it seems like a cruisey place to work and the money is good then stay. If you have some moral objection to being overpaid and underworked and you feel professionally castrated by being on the project then leave. If it was me I'd stay.

                  not bothered about underworked...theres plenty of work....yeah, I've made sure that all commercial decision is to be undertaken by the company....don't mind staying for the money..just don't like getting beaten around by the customer eveytime i go in

                  see what happens in the next week....i'll update you all...

                    Stay and sort it out ! You are doing what I have a tendency to do in Service Management which is to take on responsibility for what isn't your job !!! Explain clearly to the parties involved where the process is stalled.
                    Include senior people in the discussion if you can't get progress.
                    Get people round a table instead of getting fobbed of by one side and apologising to the other.
                    Give people clear lists of what you want from them and when, keep your involvement purely on the areas you are responsible for.
                    At the end of the day, no-one will care in 5 yrs time, it's only work, put in for a pay rise and leave if they say no !
