There surely has to be a compromise here.. what's the point in having a section on the board for 'Accounting / Legal' if everyone is going to be replied to with "ask your accountant".
To the original poster - sorry I don't personally know, but I've put training books through my company, don't see why not if they are work related.
Strictly they are assets and therefore subject to the capital allowances regime. They are not consumed. (Though expensing them is OK since the residual value is effectively nil).
Books are not always allowable - the expense has to be incurred "wholly exclusively and necessarily in the performance of the duties of the employment". If a book puts you in a position to do the job then that expense is not in the performance of the duties - the HMRC view is at http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/manuals/senew/SE32435.htm
