Started at 4am yesterday. Executive Meeting started at 8am finished at 8pm. Had a splitting headache. Then drinks / meal / work socializing until midnight.

Now up at 5am, bang headache still, short burst to update presentation in office at 7, schedule is 7.30 until 7pm, three hour presentation questions / answers / strategy from me before next presenters, then straight back out for schmoozing / final meal / meet more people.

I worked at a place (as a contractor) in London in the insurance sector. Presenteeism, after work beers that felt mandatory. I stuck it out and tried my hardest to fit in, and "network". Workaholics is workaholics.

Nowadays I take the stance that I am hired to perform a service, and I do just that. Just that. Nothing more.

If I get pulled up for clinical timekeeping I always point out that I'm merely saving myself for when we need to do 26 hour days.

I am not a permie. I don't need to climb the ladder. I don't mind people taking credit for my work. I really don't care to be honest.

I would stop all after work activity immediately. If you are asked why, simply say you are fully committed to the project, and will always be prepared to put the extra 6 miles in when necessary but don't want to fritter your energy levels away on excessive socialising so you won't be as effective when they REALLY need to call on you.
