Rate depends on location. Think £40 ph and above in London, and more like £35 ph outside. Shorter contracts with specific tasks can be higher rate, but a lower rate can be compensated for by a longer term. And some skills command more. But if you research the market you can apply direct and cut out the parasite.

Us UNIX guys get paid around that mark in the UK. It's a tulip load more stable than any other field as well (I delve into .Net occasionally as well and get different offers all over the shop).

MVS Systems Programmers were never 'common stuff' - we were bloody demigods! The techiest of the techs. Application progs and managers had to beg on thier knees for the crumbs of wisdom that fell from our table - and all our best work was done in the pub.
