Not me. I know more about German history than most and I know that what happened in the 30s and 40s wasn't just caused by a 'few loonies'. Anti-semitism and the idea of a Germanic übermensch were very deeply rooted in German culture for a long time before the 1930s. But I also can't think of any society in the world which has changed its ways so comprehensively as Germany.
    It bloody had to.

You forget that a lot of us grew up listening to stories about the atrocities commited by the Germans during the war. A lot of our parents and grandparents lived through that. Peoples attitudes are not going to change overnight just because the Germans been good citizens since 1945.

The line "Oh the war? That was the Nazis" doesn't wash I'm afraid.

It is important to remember that.

(For a given definition of CUK 'normal', but you know what I mean.)
There have been a few studies done since then that have shown it's very easy for authority figures to convince "normal" people from around the world to inflect pain on or to discriminate against others singularly or as a group if there are no detrimental consequences to themselves.

Though watching one experiment conducted in different developed countries around the world it showed that British adults in general are so distrustful of authority they don't tend to play along.

Colmar has a pretty decent Christmas market. But then, it used to be part of Germany.

Germany looks fine from my office window, but France is a bit more murky. It may rain later. The only German I had problems while working with was a program manager from East Germany. He was a smeghead though due to his communist upbringing, I think. It was a fairly widespread opinion he was ex-stasi.

Bit of the history that is rarely mentioned is how the country was put in a position where national socialism was seen as the best or only solution for the population. Think war reparations designed to destroy the country and it’s people – Yeah I know they were the aggressors from WW1 as well but that was a very different situation.
Most other countries would have sucked it up but there was no chance the Germans would. Not an excuse for subsequent actions as a result of putting mentals in charge but useful to fill in the gaps of how and why they ever got the chance.
