Learning Javascript

New clientco has a system that is heavily dependent on Javascript. I've done some very basic stuff before but can anyone recommend a decent online website, book or videos to learn from?

I'd recommend Mozilla Developer Network.

I find it useful but I'm sure Nick will be along soon to tell me why they're terrible

Have access to a Dev Instance & Administrator of the main SFA system. Wanted to prototype some stuff as well as putting in the requirements. Seems like a good opportunity to pick up some new skills.

Javascript is hardly a "new" skill. I'd avoid at all costs.

A skill is something someone possess, so if MF hasn't learnt JavaScript before then it will be a new skill for him. If he has said a new skill in a recently designed language and you had said "Javascript is hardly a new language" then you would be right. I sometime wonder about the level of basic comprehension, of some people.

+1 however Javascript is a rapidly changing skill as people have now started to realise what you can actually do with it.

Without going into ridiculous detail your best bet is the mozilla developer network described above unless you see a number of $( type lines in which point you will want to learn jquery.

In the Woods – “jQuery for Absolute Beginners” Video Series is a good starting point for jquery if you don't mind videos.

JS and webby stuff may be in vogue but is ugly and there are a gazillion code-monkeys out there who can do it. It's the one area I've always stayed away from where possible.

WHS, it's horrible if they could reboot the web then Javscript would be removed and Python or Ruby used.

Don't know about Ruby, but Python is every bit as horrible as Javascript.

What we should be using is ECMAScript4, which is Javascript with classes (basically the same as ActionScript 2, although that's not important). Which makes it a pretty decent object oriented language akin to C# or Java, but manages to be mostly backwards compatible.

It's really sad that with all the wave of hype about HTML5 being used for serious applications, that we're still stuck with this numptie scripting language.
