I would imagine the chance to recover diminishes fairly quickly as previously used disc space gets overwritten, or does it? Maybe installing the recover prog itself will overwrite it.

You're right.

Best practice would be to remove the drive ASAP and do the recovery on another system with the drive connected via USB or similar.

For future reference for anyone else, I use and recommend this most excellent program: Unformat and File Recovery Software for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista
