Backup drive / Network drive

I use a second HDD in my PC for backups, using Vista very quick. (30 mins for a 300gb complete backup)

I rotate the second disk with another one, kept separate from the PC in case the PC get's stolen.

I got one of the mybook things on Saturday - it went back yesterday
My opinion - garbage.
I put it on my network - followed the instructions - you HAVE to install mionet (up to 500Mb) and then got "disk mount failed". Eventually , got it to mount for a bit - very very very slow. Cancelled my backup - then lost connectivity. Tried the advanced manual, rescanned, reset device - powered eveything off, tried again - on about the 20th attempt got on the stupid device - on a new drive letter!!- deleted any data I had put on. Took device back.
I have no idea how I eventually managed to get on it - what I did different each time when I finally got on.
Don't recommend it!!
Will probably be geting a Thecus device - more expensive - but recommended by other contrators here.

Seconded - I have a MyBook and wouldn't recommend it due to similar experiences. I've persevered with mine, but frankly, it's pants. I also e-mailed the support folk with a question, they didn't answer until well outside of their published response promise, and gave an answer that was no help (I solved the problem in the interim using Google).

Other things to bear in mind about MyBook - it tries to stop you sharing some file types (although this can be hacked)
It runs under a version of Linux which allows it to impose security restrictions and stuff that you can't control easily (unless you want to hack about in it in which case you can more or less do what you like).

I use a linkstation buffalo 250Gb. Has its own OS, Portal with a built in backup program. You can backup to another USB device on a schedule with differential, full or append modes.
Has a 1 Gb interface, is AD compatible, built in FTP server, tea maker, etc.
Get one.

I've got a lacie NAS thingie - 500GB, the one with a blue button on the front.

It's utter tulipe. Noisy, slow (even with a wired gigabit network) and generally ugly.

Is it for a PC or a laptop - if a PC consider getting a Firewire800 card and one of these little gems - which handles the back ups from my imac most admirably (I don't need the card as FW800 is built in).
