Getting out of Dodge (aka Leaving the UK)

I've been away from the UK for a couple of months and ended up in Hong Kong. Having nothing better to do, I started looking for a permie job (I know, I know... :emb ) and it looks like I'm going to get an offer of one to start in mid-Oct !! Having read through a number of posts on the...

    War chest

Excuse my ignorance of terminology, but doesn't being able to pay yourself divs mean you have a warchest?

How often do you get a new laptop?

My 2006 MBP is still a very capable machine but it's started to randomly stop responding (not grey-screen-of-death crashing, everything just freezes*) and as I use it as my primary work machine it made business sense to replace. *I suspect that it's overheating due to bad airflow. I'll be...

    New MacBook Pros

Thanks for the advice folks. A quick google for the Intel SSD doesn't return many online retailers. Can anyone provide a link to one of these new fangled interweb shops? As I already have a 500GB external HD, I'm definitely heading towards the SSD option - even if it's 160quid more :mad

    New MacBook Pros

After three+ years of faithful service, I'll be replacing my trusty 2006-vintage 17" MBP with the just-released model. The question for the panel is whether I should go 128Gb SSD or stay old skool with a 500Gb/7200rpm HD? (I can't really justify the larger 256 or 512 SSDs :D)

    Chill

Been listening to it on-and-off for about five years, originally on DAB. It was especially helpful for getting to sleep as there weren't any DJs and virtually no ads. Chill and 6Music made my DAB receiver worth its asking price. I believe it was originally set up by the owner of the DAB...

    Apple

Yes, it is Apple's walled garden but what I'm personally (I know, delusions of adequacy :tongue) annoyed about is what's the point of this rule? How does it improve shareholder value to exclude a many number of developers by making them dump their years of experience in ActionScript (in the...

    Apple

The sad thing is this probably won't affect Adobe that much. It'll be the little players like PhoneGap and Appcelerator (their Titanium tool looks awesome) who'll be screwed because of Teh Steve's hatred of Flash. Their computer products are still, just about, better that the competition (I've...

    Website Advice...

I find DZone a good source of what's 'hot' in the Java world and development in general. JRoller is decent source of Java-related blogs. TheServerSide and InfoQ have been around a while but I find them a bit boring these days. I also check out the Java questions on StackOverflow to see what...

How much more in dividends this tax year?

Given your figures, my spreadsheet comes back with exactly the same figure that you have. Even without the pension offset, it's still in the region of 6.8K. So, your accountant seems to be way off. I would send your acc a spreadsheet with your calculations and ask them to review it. IANAA, etc.

What's happened to The Times website today?

I only read the Times Online after reading the following (in order): Granuiad, Torygraph, BBC, CUK, NYTimes, Google News, porn sites, Dilbert, CUK again, tech/geek sites, other porn sites, more CUK and then the Times... The Baltic Times that is - Latvia's leading paper (probably). So, no...

    Storing multiple passwords & logins

I use Wiki-on-a-Stick - basically a offline/server-less wiki tool. It can create password-protected encrypted pages which is where I keep my account passwords. For extra security, the wiki (a single HTML file) is stored on a Truecrypt volume.

    That'll be MUCH safer then!!

It's a consultation so they are asking you. Pretty stealthy by announcing it don't you think? (Not excusing NL, but c'mon RTFA!)
