Dismissing an argument Ad Hominem might not be strictly logical when considering an argument purely on it's own merits but it's a useful heuristic that saves a lot of time that would otherwise be spent seeking logical flaws in arguments created by idiots, so in the grander scheme of things it's perfectly rational.
