If we told my MIL we were going to a better restaurant she wouldnt care. Knowing full well theres not a chance in hell that she'd even consider putting her hand in her pocket to pay for any of it.

In fact, would turn up without any money/means to pay and expect someone to pay for her.

Well, we actually suggested a better restaurant where the prices are about the same as the 'all you can eat' place she'd suggested. Of course, it wasn't 'all you can eat' and Lady Tester's remark that the only way 'all you can eat' places make a profit is by cutting on quality has obviously led to some discussion among the members of her family that see each other every other day.

MIL said to Lady Tester on the phone that in the past she didn't care what sort of restaurant we visited, so why does she want something smarter nowadays, and why is she always wearing smart clothes when she wore old crap in the past? Is it because of that MTT?

I have supposedly 'changed' MIL's daughter from the simple farm girl they (thought they'd) raised into a posh and rather fussy person who's always better dressed than the rest of the family.

Perhaps it's a (misguided?) perception that you, and their daughter, might look down on them?

I'm not a big fan of all you can eat buffets myself. I've always thought it's how they use up leftovers at the end of the week.

I think they're genuinely too simple to comprehend how rich they are. They recently recieved the valuation the council puts on houses for the sake of taxes and were genuinely shocked, saying ´but we´re just simple people that don´t have that kind of money´. I can sympathise because many people who bought or built their homes in the 70s now have considerable wealth tied up in their bricks and mortar and of course the politicoscum want their cut. But the remarks are getting increasingly strange as if they're jealous of something.

Yeah, my parents demonstrated strangely conflicting attitudes as well. It was a bit surreal when you considered that they had "sacrificed so much" (their words) to give us a decent education then when we showed signs of benefiting from it dosh wise they didn't like it one bit.
