If it is a relatives snatch I hope the lock them up and throw away the key. Not only for doing what they did but not speaking up and causing all this furor that affects other cases in the future. It makes my blood boil that in so many cases it's family, like that pair of ******* idiots in Dewsbury and it hardens the public to these situations. Now when a child genuinely goes missing or strangers involved not only do the parents have to deal with that but they have the general public eyeing them up for it as well. Why should decent people be accused just off the back of twats like this case. Rant over.

People just tramping along in a row or wandering around on their own like that are likely to do more harm than good in finding evidence. Too many untrained enthusiast can cause a lot of damage to property too.

They were there to give the family the impression that they themselves were not suspects while the police investigated them. I was sure of that over the course of the search. I think we all knew that the story of him just leaving was BS.

Well if you were then you would know that they are told how to do it and get briefed and accompanied and if anything is found then they are all to stop, whilst an officer checks.

The police tend to go public now when they know someone in the family did it.

They like them to do Press Conferences and the like with the TV cameras there so when the guilty family member admits it/another family member confesses who did it, the press coverage can be used in evidence to help convict them.

When the family are pushing for media coverage because the police aren't interested that's when to get worried about strangers.

Sad but very true. I just can't face reading about this - very upsetting.

Good PR for the police too. They'd face a lot of criticism if they accused the family without appearing to do everything to find the child. And by getting the public to do it they haven't wasted too much police time on a search they probably knew was pointless.

My limited understanding of Scottish law is that someone can be "detained" for questioning for a limited time and after that they must be released or arrested and charged (which means they can't be questioned further). Does anyone have any insight into how the system works?

Can't recall the details now but men who have appeared to be too helpful in cases of disappeared children have come under suspicion.
