The heaviest polluters are HGV which are already limited to 60mph on motorways, it will be a road safety nightmare having the usual two lanes of leapfrogging 60mph artics and cars that dare not go over 60 (which is likely to be actual 54mph)

Ridiculous.

Anyone knows that it's not the speed one is doing, more the load being exerted on the engine.

For example, driving at 50 mph in second gear would result in more particulates being belched out than driving at 80mph in 6th or overdrive.

We have just had managed motorway changes completed on the m62 around Leeds and it has made travel better in many ways. However, it is used as and when required whereas this seems an attempt at a blanket reduction in a national speed limit regardless of traffic conditions.

Cant they just increase fuel duty by 100% or something so that a vast majority cannot afford fuel and so pollution levels go down.

All this pollution nonsense as if the world is going to end in next 10 years.

The vast majority have speed limiters set to between 50 and 56 mph, although as you say the speed limit is 60mph for them. Why do you think it would be a nightmare?
