There was a documentary about prisoners getting out on the Beeb a couple of weeks back. Desperately sad - no effort at all to ensure that the people were equipped for 'life outside'

Had a mate who worked at Broadmoor as an Occupational Therapist. He genuinely loved his job.

When I was in the Sixth Form our school's debating society had a couple of debates with the local prison debating society. For some reason they wouldn't come to us, so we went inside to them. They were interesting experiences.

As you might expect, the majority of the prisoners weren't educated to a very high level, but even so quite a few were perfectly capable of arguing a point cogently and with eloquence. I think that came as a bit of an eye-opener for some of my schoolmates brought up in a world of cosy Home Counties prejudices about rogues, vagabonds, and miscreants, aka the working class

my brother is a clergy type bloke, and part of his training was to work in prisons and occasionally take young offenders around to show them what they were in for.
He says that the young lads used to come strutting in, all cocky, and they left, scared and diminished and never wanting to see a cocky again
