I enjoyed series 1 and particularly the quote about morris dancers :

"Morris dancing is the most fatuous, tenth-rate entertainment ever devised by man. Forty effeminate blasphemists waving bits of cloth they've just wiped their noses on. How it's still going on in this day and age I'll never know"

I'm part of a small minority that likes the original Blackadder.

The second, third and fourth series were even better though, with great stories and funny situations in all of them. Classic comedy

Series 1 was the weakest of the lot, but still quite funny. My fave was series 2.

'Nuff said.

It also had Peter Cook (a "Comedy God" IMHO) and Jim Broadbent. But even they couldn't save it, the writing just wasn't that good. I don't think Ben Elton had a hand in the writing of Series 1, whereas he did in the last three. Don't like his politics but he can write good comedy.

The Last Episode is IMHO one of the most poignant and moving things I have ever seen on TV.

They did the documentary on the whole Blackadder thing and discussed how that ending came about and how in "real speed" it was farcical but then someone left the video flicking over frame by frame and soon realised that "that was it" no matter what they did they couldn't improve on it!!

I watched the series once with a group of Lads, real gobtulipe Lads, ripping the piss out of it all the way through... but but during the final say 10 minutes they just shut up and watched it and there were even a few <hurumphs> and subtle tears wiped at the last slo-mo.
