I've only worked in Germany for short durations but I've visited many times. I reckon it is a good place to live and work. I admire the German appreciation of good quality and customer service.

Classing someone as being normal and like you or I when they did what they did does not compute.Originally posted by RichardCranium View PostIMPORTANT PRINCIPLE: It was not loonies that did the Holocaust. It was normal people, like you and me.
It is important to remember that.
(For a given definition of CUK 'normal', but you know what I mean.)
If you mean the normal every day soldiers forced to do those things on pain of being shot then fair enough, I'm talking about the loonies in charge.Comment

I think a lot of British have stereotypes about Germany and Germans, these stereotypes are very dated IMO. Most German women Ive seen in saunas here are not hairy at all and they are in the main quite easy going and fun to be around. The proud owner of 125 Xeno Geek PointsComment

Which saunas would be best in your experience that one might confirm the veracity of these observations?Originally posted by chef View PostI think a lot of British have stereotypes about Germany and Germans, these stereotypes are very dated IMO. You don't know what happened, do you?Originally posted by jmo21 View PostClassing someone as being normal and like you or I when they did what they did does not compute.

Yes, there are documented instances of Wehrmacht officers objecting when told to shoot prisoners and civilians. One would expect such behaviour from conventional trained solders and officers. But where do you think the SS were recruited from? The Wehrmacht and the general public.
And the rounding up of civilians and packing them onto trains, and the running and operation of concentration camps and the running of the death camps - that was done by thousands of civilians, not soldiers forced on pain of death.
No, it does not compute. But it is what happened. That it is why it is so shocking.Originally posted by jmo21 View PostClassing someone as being normal and like you or I when they did what they did does not compute.
The loonies in charge didn't get their hands dirty. The masses did it for them. And the masses comprise normal every day people. Like you.Originally posted by jmo21 View PostI'm talking about the loonies in charge.
Remember the mad summer when the two girls were killed by the school caretaker? How paediatricians (as opposed to paedophiles) got beaten up and their windows smashed and run out of town? That summer's madness, fuelled by media frenzy and political panicking, has resulted in children not being allowed out to play, schools looking like concentration camps, the disappearance of children's groups because nobody wants to be a leader, greater difficulty and cost finding childcare and compulsory checking and registration systems. (Which have not prevented child abuse, so there you go.) That's how easy it is to over-react in our own society.
When the Merkins lost two tower blocks that killed thousands, they initiated illegal wars that are still going on 10 years later that have killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians, yet they haven't got the one bloke responsible. But it has also resulted in Seikhs being beaten up for being Moslem so they stop wearing their turbans; huge hatred and fear against all Moslems; and a general spread of fear globally. We permit illegal detention and torture of prisoners, we turn a blind eye to the elimination of expert witnesses, we re-elect the bastards that started it. And we cheerfully went along with it (I say "we" but some of us did actually try to protest). That's how easy it is to over-react in our own society.
If you ever get the chance, visit the exhibition centres at Auschwitz-Birkenau or Bergen-Belsen. They explain it better than I can and make the point:
It was not mad people that did this; it was people like you. Remember that, so that you never make the same mistake.Last edited by RichardCranium; 13 January 2011, 14:32.My all-time favourite Dilbert cartoon, this is: BTW, a Dumpster is a brand of skip, I think.Comment

So why do you concentrate so singularly on the Germans? Everyone was at it. Were they any worse? Even recently in Yugoslavia there were atrocities, if not on the same scale. And no doubt it would all happen all over again if times became tough.Originally posted by RichardCranium View PostIt was not mad people that did this; it was people like you. Claudius Therme in Cologne
Neptune Bad also in Cologne
essentially, the more expensive sauna's. Sauna's are as common as going to the gym in the uk and as such there are your local Sauna's which have the basic facilities and are cheap to goto but expect to see your council estate german in there, in the more expensive and thus nicer sauna's are equal to if not better than uk spa's with several sauna types, indoor / outdoor swimming, gardens to stroll around in after a sauna (naked) and the "quality" of people are better "presented"The proud owner of 125 Xeno Geek PointsComment
