It was the mid-90's I was there, and it was £2K's worth *then*

See above, I'm unfortunately a bit out of date. I skied mainly around Mt Bandai, and Lake Inawashiiro which was fine for a beginner. I hear some of the resorts around Tokyo get*really* crowded and are to be avoided.

Oh dear. Still, I saved quite a bit buying cheap ski stuff in the end-of-season sales in the US this week, so can afford my £8 beers.

If you want to save a bit of cash try an Inghams hotel, I stayed at one in Courcheval 1650 which was run by kids on their gap year who didn’t really care for the companies profits, they never minded us taking extra bottles of wine from the table into the bar and the barman used to play Hi Lo turn of a card to decide if should I pay for beers or not.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

I'm also going to St Anton!

Heard it's quite a lively place, good off piste too.

I've also heard it's expensive, but I'm in a fully catered chalet with free wine so it's only lunch and the odd beer (or two) in the afternoon and late evening to pay for.

It isn't expensive really, not at circa 1.35 to the pound, so it's not going to break the bank (another redundant saying) now at crca 1.15.

Did you not find 1650 a bit out of the way?

That was the best thing, besides it was nice skiing right across Les 3 Vallées to Meribel for lunch, 1850 was full of Russian oligarchs and their hooker wives’.

Have you ever seen a jet land at Courchevel Altiport? I never have. It would make a good ski jump in my opinion.

Still, you can do it yourself now: http://www.simtours.net/courchevel.php

No but there were a few twin prop planes, they would hurtle down what looked like 150m of runway and seemingly disappear over the edge for a few seconds before climbing again, fascinating to watch.

There's a few vid's on YouTube if IIRC.

I have been skiing in Austria.

It was really good. The weather was brilliant - cold but dry. The snow was great.

It was about 23 years ago, though. It might have changed.

I've just seen your other thread and realised we'll be there at the same time. Look out for me, I'll be the one hurtling down the mogul black run, noticeable because my skiis will be a few metres behind me.
