Of course Apple and Microsoft are not in competition, heck, noone is competing with Apple apart from Mr Bankrupcy. Frankly it is amazing they managed to survive for so long, but no way in hell they will ever have more than 5% share of Personal Computers. iPods, iPhones and other iCarp is what will probably save Apple, but as far as PCs are concerned it is all done and dusted: IBM PC won.

Frankly the more Macs become IBM PC-like in terms of CPU, same memory the less point it is to buy Mac because you might as well save money and buy PC.

Hmmm...it is not about the hardware. It is the OS that makes Mac superior to the PC.

I'm not replacing the laptop I'm replacing the OS. The laptop will still get used but only when I'm on the move. The mac mini will still put inthe other office (i have 2)

I also find it odd that you had an Airport to connect to your laser printer. Sounds like the thin edge of the wedge to me. You buy an Aiport and then the next thing you know the only way to print is to buy another piece of Apple hardware.

The airport allows my printer to be in another room where it's not heard or seen, it's a space devouring machine. The same room also has no telephone connection so I can't have one hub and I don't want yards of cable through the place.

IMO the best chance for Macs is to have virtualised Windows XP on the same box they sell so that you don't even need to double boot whenever you want to run Windows app. Naturally this is also the road to oblivion since in this case there won't be any point to develop anything specifically for Macs.

Frankly Jobs should have released his GUI on top of Linux to finally get decent Desktop Linux OS and make money on hardware without such a nasty tie of Mac OS to Mac box.

Virtual Desktops

Windows XP has got Virtual Desktops built in, just there is nothing with the basic OS to manage them

I use Virtual Desktop Toolbox - very helpful if you need to login under different usernames at the same time for testing purposes.. Or if you just want to manage your desktop space better

Yoda3D will give you a fancy graphics way of handling more desktops but the configuration options are next to none.

Oh and I use RocketDock to keep shortcuts to all my favourite applications handy

Someone should just make Mac OS theme for Windows XP and give free PC laptops to those Mac freaks.
