Helpful Joyriders!

Arrived at the station car park this morning, expecting to have to pay to park the Bentley as a new parking meter had been installed over the Christmas period (the old one being out of action for the last few months).

Some thoughtful soul had kindly torched a car next to the new meter, thus rendering it out of action!

Good work joyriding fellas :D

Of course, but only if they don't run over\kill innocent members of the public whilst on their way to perform a random act of kindness.

Might be a tax inspector. Or a Treasury official.

Don't forget, in lovely cuddly Britain it's:

Parking Meter Torched = No Parking

Not

Parking Meter Torched = Free Parking

Agreed but:

Parking Meter torched = no revenue

I saw the recent story about gangs lopping off the heads of old style parking meters to take away and loot the cash inside - does no meter= no parking?

If pay & display machines are visited by Mr Thermite - does the whole car park get suspended?

Lewes, a town with a tradition of both protest (Tom Paine lived here) and firework displays (it's the "bonfire capital" of the UK), has seen 193 terrorist attacks on parking meters since the NCP became the parking police in 2004. Somebody has been loading the six-foot metal sentinels with gunpowder and blowing them to smithereens.
Nobody likes the NCP parking scheme, or the parking wardens who appeared like a rash in their natty red uniforms and started giving people £30 tickets if you were so much as a minute late. But blowing up the meters can't be right, can it? I asked everybody I knew: about half were with the terrorists. Some sat on the fence. A shopkeeper said: "Good on 'em!" One reason draconian parking schemes are unpopular is that they rob towns of their character - people move away from the centre, with its specialist shops, and towards the supermarkets, with big car parks.
Direct action ... works

Yes. See also Cool Hand Luke.

"If pay & display machines are visited by Mr Thermite - does the whole car park get suspended?"

Yes. This happened in the carpark by my local station last year. Everyone who parked there got a ticket (including me) and appeal turned down with quotation of relevant parking regulation in response.
