What in God's name is this interface all about? FFS.
It's all about a fckup on MS's part and a complete fail, they even have that crap on their latest server ffs.

I'll stick to a Linux / Unix CLI for work. For desktop a mix of Win7 and Linux Mint (Win7 only cos I need it for some music software).

So, if I want to switch the thing on and have a 2 tabbed browser I have to. .

        Click on the IE button
        Click on the screwdriver
        Select 'view on desktop'

I just use win + d to get to the desktop, click on ie.

I use the win + c to open the sidebar, sorry charm and use that almost like a start menu.

I tend to bypass the modern ui interface and stick with the desktop but the win + c works a treat and I actually find that better than the start menu.

              Win + R

              shutdown -r

Then stick the windows 7 CD in the drive and reboot....

Microsoft can do so may things so well, they ripped apart all opposition in an already dominated games machine market to produce the xbox 360 which is king now, yet they just seem to destroy the desktop market which they ruled.

Did they never get someone to test the beta on windows 8 and pick up on "I don't know what is going on here, how do I switch off"?

I think they only tested it on tablets - or that's how it seems. Tablets rarely shutdown, but go into standby, so you don't need an easy way to shut it down.

Basically, it's an effing tablet OS - and an average one at best.

Now if W8 had two installation modes, so that it functions slightly differently on a tablet, fair enough. But to force desktop users to use their desktop PC's like a tablet.

Thanks for this guys, Mr C has just bought a Win 8 upgrade and I don't think he's going to be too impressed when he puts it on.

Still, I can tell him that it was CUK to the rescue once I've reset it for him

Don't you just hit Windows key and select/type desktop?
