    Firefox trying HTTPS first

I've noticed recently that whenever I type a URL into Firefox's address bar, it's trying https:// first and using that if it works. Otherwise, it reverts to plain ol' http://

This happens even if I type http://....

Just updated FF to 15.0.1 and tried a domain I'd never visited before while hooked up to an HTTP debugger. Could not reproduce. Might it be some extension you have installed?

      Is it all sites?

I know google goes to https if you're signed in.

Maybe you have mistyped the address, google seach picked it up and tried https first.

Btw FF has become a joke lately.

I've dropped Chrome and have gone back to FF, I haven't noticed any problems with it.

            FF 13.x and 14.x crashed a lot.

FF 15 seems to be pretty stable.

Ok, this is freaking me out now!!

Tried Travelodge's URL in both Firefox and Chrome.

Chrome is ok (stays on HTTP)
                Firefox redirects (to HTTPs)

Tried typing it all manually with the http:// at the beginning aswell (ignoring the auto complete)

I don't have any extension installed that would do this.

                  What extensions do you have?
It could be an over zealous 'safe browsing' thing - anti-virus plug in or such like.

I've had this recently too but put it down to the fact I was using client co laptop via VPN and that they had been messing around with proxy redirects. It does it for Firefox but not in IE, exactly as you say redirects to https, no extensions other than Xmarks are on Firefox.
