Email hosting

Google offer the best bet for a free solution.

Also, not really an email solution, but it might be of interest...

If you don't mind parting with a little bit of cash, you could take out a cheap web hosting deal.

After also having massive issues with Streamline I'd thoroughly recommend Vidahost who I've now been with for about 6 months.

Their basic package would give you the email server you're looking for but then also include some of the basic website features as well like a domain, a file server etc. £17 for a year.

I've got a (referral!) link...
http://www.vidahost.com/markwalker

and my name also acts as a coupon code for 10% off

one more vote for gmail. However I use Windows Live Mail as the client. Basically has a nicer interface, lets you access your email off line and works well with mutliple email accounts.
