    virtual servers

Always seems a strange concept to me! If I have 4 virtual servers in a solution, how many phsyical pieces of kit will I need?

Assuming I am setting up a production and test/dev environment. Prod will require 2 phsyical servers and one virtual server. Test/dev will require 3 virtual servers. How many phsyical servers will be needed? I am assuming that I could get away with 2 servers but better to go with 3....?!

Any info on this that I can read to gen up!! Seems such a noddy question but baffling me at present....!

    TIA

Depends how resilient you want your virtual environment to be and whether you want to seperate out your development environment from your production environment.

You could easily host 4 servers on one ESXi server but should that go down then you are in the cack.

Much better (if you can afford it) to go with at least 2 servers in a HA cluster, and if you see your VM environment expanding then maybe consider a third box for proper redundancy.

Starts to get a tad expensive once you start doing this as you really need some shared storage too.
