    Sendmail hell

I am trying to configure a linux server for a brief demo of an open source tool.
    It uses sendmail

Try as I might to configure sendmail and am getting precisely nowhere

can some kind soul please give me some pointers. What I am unearthing on google is bloody confusing. What's a smarthost FFS?

    details are for arguments sake

    mail.somemailserver.com
    username fred
    password bloggs

so I have configured a smarthost, and a client-info file and rebuilt the hash database

when I try the following from the command line

    sendmail - v [email protected] < mail.test

    I get the following error

WARNING: local host name (MyServer) is not qualified; see cf/README: WHO AM I?
    No local mailer defined

    after a brief hang

    please help
Knock first as I might be balancing my chakras.

    Try this in /etc/hosts.....

    xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx hostname FQDN

Where of course xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP, hostname is the hostname and FQDN is the hostname with domain appended, apologies if that's obvious...

Long time since I dicked around with sendmail and it was always a twatt then, and I'm a Solaris dood, dunno if u edit /etc/hosts directly on Linux or if Linux has some user-friendly way of avoiding use of vi.....

It appears to be to do with your server name not being specified in the sendmail config file.
