Apologies for asking probably an obvious question - If dvd's are played on a blue ray player, do I get blue ray picture quality or only dvd quality still ?

you will get DVD quality, which may or may not be upscaled, depending on your player, so might look better than a normal DVD player but it won't be BR quality. BluRay has more data encoded in the actual files which isn't there in the DVD files.
