I think last months PCW magazine had a review on laptops - check out:

      For info

You also sometimes get good deals on www.scan.co.uk/todayonly

I'd consider returning it to the seller, and claiming it was not fit for purpose. One would reasonably expect a laptop to last more than 15 months.

My ThinkPad keeled over yesterday and now makes the sound of a cricket in its death throes. Fortunately I had the foresight to buy the 3 year warranty and next business day response (had it for 2 yrs and 9 months) and I will have an engineer out with a new motherboard on monday

So new ThinkPad + 3yr warranty is the way to go IMO

It appears I'm unable to recommend a laptop for under £500, and unable to read posts properly

I hear Dell Vostro's are quite good. Acer's are also quite cheap. Not sure if you can get a built-in webcam for that price point though.
