    Hidden files

    Gents,

    Here's the problem.

My Temporary Internet Folder tells me it has nearly 200 files, 13 folders and is taking up 200mb of data.

When I defrag - the defrag report tells me there are a couple of large files in there badly fragged.

HOWEVER, when I look at it using Windows Explorer (or directly from DOS), it appears empty.

Any ideas? I don;t want these files hanging around taking up space and I can;t see them to delete them.

I'm running XP if that helps.

    Any help gratefully received.

    Cheers

    Mike

You shouldn't really need these files.

Suggest you empty temporary files folder. Go to Control Panel/Internet Options then click the Delete Files button.

If you have Norton Sytemworks, there is also a CleanSweep program which will remove redundant and temporary files.

Finally, if you have a broadband connection, change your 'Check for newer versions of stored pages' settings in Temporary Internet Files to Never.

      re: Hidden Files

      Hi,

      I don;t think I explained myself properly.

I have cleaned out the temporary files folder. However when I select properties for the folder, it tells me I have 13 folders, 200+ files and is taking up 200mb of space.

I can view the folder and it looks empty.

I wonder if I can just delete the entire folder and recreate?

      Help!

      Cheers,
      Mike

        Re: re: Hidden Files

In WIn explorer go to the folder select TOOLS -> FOLDER OPTIONS > VIEW

then goto "Hidden FIoes and Folders" and tick Show Hidden Files

you will then be able to see 'em.

Thanks, but I already tried that. Still remains blank.

          This is really weird!

Tried it as well, and it seems to work!

Bit worrying though, did the 'Internet Options' stuff and the folder seems empty just like you mentioned.

Looked at folder properties though and there were nearly 6000 files.

                  .

                  Go into DOS, then type:

                  C:

cd "\Documents and Settings" (or cd \docume~1 if you don't like typing)

This contains a folder for each Windows user, typically "fred". Now just type:

                  rmdir /s "fred\Local Settings\Tempor~1\Content.IE5"

                  simple as that.

(The Content.IE5 folder is the one containing all the junk files, and Windows will automatically recreate it when needed.)

Obvious disclaimer: This causes no problems on my system, and I'm pretty sure it's safe to do on any system. But don't blame me if anything or everything goes pear shaped as a result of trying it on your's !
