    Hosting

Ok, I'm looking for advice on hosting. Not been there before so this is all new to me.

I don't need much to start out with but I do need SSI, PHP, MySQL and - a must this - Java. I will be running examples of my Java code from PHP cgi scripts.

It looks like I need a virtual dedicated server (Linux) for around £10-£15 per month.

Anything I should be aware of? Any recommendations? Any questions I should be asking the provider?

    Have a look at Webfusion
Ah, on reflection maybe a bit pricey for you...

(Other's more technical will be able to answer your q's, OH)

You might have problems trying to find a dedicated server for £10 - 15.

      Even 1&1 charge £29.99

I am using Bytemark and am very happy with them. I have a Linux VM running under UML, though I keep meaning to move to one of their Xen hosts soon.

Good service, very friendly, great bunch of chaps. They also have mirrors of various Linux distro's so updates don't eat up your monthly bandwidth limit.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I don't think I want a dedicated server at start out and it is very pricey. In fact, if I was serously considering a dedicated server I would probably go Mac and supply my own box.

No, looks like a virtual server is the way to go but I wondered if people had had problems with these.

I use wenfusion and I'm happy with them.

They support SPF, PHP and the like...

That's shared, Dear - not dedicated.

Your dedicated servers cost quite a whack...

Mind you - Bytemark does look very good. I might investigate them further.
