    Lighting Advice

Converting the garage to office/golf sim room. I want to do something with the lighting. I've got the typical spotlights in the ceiling on a dimmer.

Looking for something different that I can control and change colour etc. I've have no design ability so looking for something that looks good. So how to light a room would have been a better title.

    Any ideas, pics etc?

IMO the colour changing isn't really the way to go. It might sound cool but likely to just be a fad and you'll end up using white 100% of the time, maybe show off to someone new and then back to white. I find they look cool on the adverts but look pretty naff when they are in.

How much you are you looking to pay? Just a bulb swap or put some effort in? Instead of taking the bulbs out that you already have and probably mostly use, have a look at adding cornice around the room that incorporates strip lights. It could look very moody in just white and you've the option of putting the colour changing LED in as well. You've got 3 lightings schemes then. Full lighting, mood white and colour and using a mix of the cornice and dimmer you've got all sorts. Definitely something I'll be looking at in my next project.

The only thing I'm wary off is exactly how much useful light they give. Looks great on all the glossy pics but I'm sure they've pre lit the room in someway so don't 100% trust the pictures.

I'm happy to pay a few hundred quid. I would prefer if it's something I could do rather than get someone in.

I originally thought of something like this

but as you say it could look a bit crap.

I like the strips but the ceiling is vaulted so not sure how it would look. I could put the strips at the bottom though.

The room will have a projector in and I noticed certain colours like purple seem to work really well, you can see fairly well but the screen picture isn't affected.

          i'd concur with this

and i decked most of my house out in Hue bulbs and strips and the only time we ever use the colour changes is when showing off or using as night lights for the kids

recessed warm white strips on a dimmer will be all you really need

Definitely naff IMO. You could try swapping out a few of the spots for colour changing ones in key places if you have having a cinema. Haven't looked in to how you can have more than one per remote though. If you just try one for 12 quid at least you've tried it.

If you are doing a projector a dimmed colour light from a recessed cornice running around could work pretty well

The main light in my bedroom is colour changing LEDs - strips hanging in loops from the various beams. The remotes stopped working, so now I it's stuck on magenta. With bedside lamps and other white LED lamps in various places it works fine.

Could've been worse. Could've got stuck on red.

That looks really nice, it's a bit plusher and bigger than my new den.
