From what I understand its a bit like the old Release Manager role, with extra bits here and there to deploy loads of production scripts and releases.Comment

It is system administration done by automating tasks as much as possible. It requires programming skills. Actually the inventor of this philosophy (a Google engineer) defined it as system administration done by developers.
The whole thing is described in a book, "Site Reliability Engineering".Comment

This. Physical Infrastructure is no more. DevOps changes the view of physical tin to one that is it a service to be consumed much like any other information service. Infrastructure requirements are defined via code template with scripts to configure them and the whole lot is automated using CI and CD tools. If I want to deploy an existing app to a new server, i change the template and it deploy.
