    Contract but no start date

Just wondered if anyone else has had an experience of this? I've been offered a job, indeed have a contract, but the client said I couldn't start last friday (for a tuesday start), due to some US paperwork. Agent has sent me back my signed contract, but without the client starting where does...

Are there any jobs out there?

Are you not finding that because rates are so low, employers are only hiring locally - because they are worried about people walking as soon as the rates rise?

    ISEB qualifications

Yes - there's plenty of free-ish ISEB material around(ebay etc) which will get you through, so no need to attend a course. The exam is multi-choice with a low pass rate (69% I think) which I did via Prometric. It's actually called the ISTQB now. Can't think it would be useful to a BA though...

I just need to get two references ...

Just had Huxley ask for 3 references! Apparently it's their policy with new contractors.

    My Bench Time

Seems your problem, and indeed mine, is the 'mainly worked in finance' bit. 20+ years in insurance, even as a contractor, isn't get me many interviews these days, so diversification of industries is the key rather than digging the very deep well of technical expertise. just my 2 cents worth...

You going to write your own references too?

    On the bench?

Especially with some contracts paying permie wages... Been on the bench for 4 weeks now. Turned down 2 interviews :spank: - probably a mistake, but the market does seem much more bouyant now - only time will tell.

    Born again contractor

Interesting thread, as I'm also stuck in the rut at the moment as I thought I'd bag a contract easily once I left my last long role. Although I'm getting interviews, it's not at the test manager level, only test analyst... Will take people's advice and give a nice skills summary for...

Longest period of time on the bench

2 weeks now - wish I'd used the 2 years i've been expecting the contract to end to start looking! My problem is I need a test management contract but jobs no longer seem aligned to skills but industry/companies. Are there industries to avoid? Also, seems alot of jobs are using the excuse of...

    c#

Anyone with c#.Net development experience willing to impart a few words of wisdom to an old timer like me? I like the look of .Net Remoting.... What are the best (paying) contract skills to consider?

    Do jobs actually exist?

Well Fungus you're quite right. I've given up trying to be a BA - seems I'm too technical, so will stick to something I know well and sod the outsourcing issue. I'd only kick myself that I didn't stay in it when the Indians don't deliver or they get too expensive.

    Do jobs actually exist?

Thanks chaps, you've given me a lot more ideas and reasons why I'm hitting a brick wall. I thought having one long contract would be good, well it seems it might be a 2-edged sword as not many would believe that it was with one client as not many permies stay for that long(2.5 years isn't it :D...

    Do jobs actually exist?

you make sense boredsenseless! I have been chasing but not everyday, so perhaps I will have to get firm with them incase they think I'm already sorted. Lucifer, cash it is then. Does anyone actually take you up on it? Has anyone else found this a good incentive, especially with xmas around the...

    Do jobs actually exist?

It is interesting, and annoying, to read another job advertised on Jobserve that is a good match for your skills with an agency you recently spoke to. Only they didn't contact you..... Huxley seem particularly good at that. Maybe the £500 will work - I'm interested to see if greed can be a...
