So it seems that unless you are claiming expenses, then it is not worth joining an umbrella company?
And that you must pay the same amount of tax as you would direct with the agency?
Is this how umbrellas work?
Thanks
thanks malvolio, so I take it that both umbrella companies and Ltd companies are still legit then? I know that you should ideally get a contract drawn up to be outside IR35 if going with your own Ltd company but does that not matter for an umbrella.
Last I heard, everyone was saying that all...
So are people saying that umbrella companies are now legal as long as you don't claim any expenses that you are not entitled to?
I thought that umbrellas were illegal anyway because they are tax evasion vehicles?
Hi Fred, can you (or anyone else) share what you know.
I agree, there is definitely a need for up to date info here and no better place than this sticky.
I am shortly thinking of going contracting and I intend to use an umbrella company ideally, or my own company.
Will be much appreciated...
sure thing. i'm not going to wait 3 years before they sort out their mess.
i have in demand skills and consider myself high calibre. don't worry, your fear mongering won't keep me in this permie job!
So I was wondering, despite the talk of the "credit crunch", how is the desktop support contracting market going in the financial IT market in London?
I'm thinking of jacking in my permie job and going contracting. I've phoned many agencies but none are interested in my 4 weeks notice period so...
A couple of things come to mind.
- if the money is paid into an offshore bank account, how can HMRC ever find out how much is there? Sure they might ask some questions about the minimal amount you pay yourself but as long as its taxed, I don't see the problem. IoM and Panama etc will not reveal...
I have a friend who uses them. And I spoke to them recently, they explained that most of their clients work in the media i.e. your typical freelancer who has a few contracts a year.
I am tempted to use them but am undecided. It reminds me of the investment that the government eventually closed...
Hi,
Does anyone know if in this industry, whether the contracts through the usual agencies such as McGregor-Boyall etc. are IR35 friendly?
Or is everyone working in London investment banks inside IR35 and therefore going PAYE? I find this hard to believe?
Maybe contracts are regularly...
Are most of you inside IR35 or outside IR35 and are you using own ltd or umbrella company? I'd be interested to hear how UK investment banks and their agencies treat this and what uk contractors are doing.
thanks
Hi all,
I was wondering if you could help, as you might imagine for a newbie, the different company types (I've read the stickies and several threads) can be quite confusing. In fact, my situation is quite unique and even my contractor friends have differing opinions.
I work in desktop support...
