    Russian plans to invade Manchester

but would they ever get all the way across europe without somone launching a load of nukes? Probably by the time they had got across germany France would have either a) surrendered b) launched its nukes. If not I suspect the US would and if they didnt the UK would if they thought a ground...

Is C a 'good' programming language?

I believe Haskell may be the same. Back in uni we had to work with a hardware specification language called maude, generally it was ok. However it had a random tendency of ignoring comment markers and treating the comments as code, so you ended up not using comments! I was recently (well not...

I think someone in the US was working on a bath sized nuclear reactor. here we go: http://www.newlaunches.com/archives/a_bathtub_sized_nuclear_reactor_could_power_20000_homes.php

    Bletchley Park funding refused

pretty much to be expected isn't it? It wouldn't being new labour if they didn't screw over IT.... It is a shame though, I mean I've never been there or really intend to go, but it is still a major part of the history and cultural side of computing.

    Fixed Term Contracts

I think you'd be lucky with expenses - most are firmly in the bounds of ir35. If you are going to take a fixed term expect to get Salary, no benefits or probably holidays. basically WHS there is not much point if you are an out-and-out contractor.

Is C a 'good' programming language?

I disagree with Java memory management being inferior. Its not about hoping it gc's it - the point is you don't have to care, you can ignore it. However, If you need real time deterministic memory management then you would need a real time version of Java. Most of the time devs don't need to...

    cycle to work

WHS - how could she cycle to (your) work when she doesn't work for you?

    Warranties in contracts

The only time I've heard of warranties in a contract is for fixed price contracts and then there would be a warranty period (normally 1 month). You would need to get work signed off as well i.e. when it passes UAT. A warranty clause without any other scope is just suicide imho. You will end up...

    just got a new contract

the only thing I might suggest is that some people are doing credit checks, in theory you only need to do it on the agency, but it might be worth doing it on the client co as well as it might show up a potential problem with getting paid.

    Dragon's Den

I think people use the ODBC MySQL driver to get around the GPL issue, as you dont put any of the MySQL driver into your code. But more to the point who uses classic asp anymore! What are they using visual interdev to develop it :laugh also isnt that a public facing ip for the db server, anyone...

    Solitaire solver

I think this is actually a rather hard program to write because the combinations of moves is huge. Using something like prolog is probably the best way to approach it, but then you would have to mangle your head to be able to program in it! Basically prolog would traverse the decision tree and...

Can not claiming enough expenses arouse suspicion?

but think like a business, it would look very dodgy if a plumber took home pretty much all his revenue. If you are a proper business then you will have expenses. For most of us that is probably just PAYE, travel, insurance and perhaps some professional costs (subscriptions etc). If it all goes...

Starting as a Contractor: any horror stories?

Sir, I think you need to tell us all some of these stories as they sound like they might actually be interesting!

    PlanB: network design, hardening, pentests

I don't really know this market very well, so I will give my expert opinion :tongue. I would think that most of the players in this area are reasonably big, so there might be an opportunity to pick up business from smaller companies?
