I still have three old PCs from my former permie employer from 9 years ago.

An old PC or two is always useful for testing. Got an old Dell Win 2000, use it now and then to check web pages as it still has IE6. If a page works on that it should work on almost anything. My lovely old win98 laptop recently expired unfortunately. Sob!Had a similar situation, we needed to test on lower-spec business laptops so I bought several old Dell craptops for £200ish each on eBaybloggoth

I had to take a craptop from current clientco due to security clearance and hard disk encryption etc.
The thing weighs an aboslute tonne too, whereas frustratingly my LTD had just bought a fancy ultrabook that weights next to nothing
Anyway, the craptop came with a nasty shoulder laptop bag, manuals, mouse and kensington lock.
Before I took it off them I asked them to keep the bag and stuff, but they refused!
The office maintains a clear desk policy and every desk is in theory a hotdesk so you can't leave anything behind. They have a few lockers but there is a giant waiting list for them. So I found the darkest corner of the office I could and flung the rubbish into it so it remains on clientco site and I dont have to lug it home

Not if the hardware spec is part of the reason you need an old PC.Originally posted by vetran View Posthonestly virtualbox is so much easier!

On Virtualbox you can set memory & cpu cap . Its not exactly the same but 90% there. I have enough tat in the home office as it is.Originally posted by d000hg View PostNot if the hardware spec is part of the reason you need an old PC.
Though possibly the client might want to check on an old machine as well if that is all they can afford, in which case you might want to do it in front of them on site. You can charge them for the pleasure and supply buns!
If you are writing close to the hardware then possibly you need the hardware close by but if as Xoggy said its just to try IE6 then a VM is more than enough.Comment
