It came out that the number of benefit sanctions (many without real cause) has risen dramatically and driven a good portion of foodbank use.

If I were CMD I'd be tearing the benefit staff to bits.

Jobcenters have always been target led, but also I'm sure orders have come from on high to reduce claimant levels

Rather than being honest and reducing the level of benefits it does rather look like they are using sanctions instead

Interesting point was some of the sanctions & deprivations drove people into work. I'm not condoning it, sounds quite barbaric but it suggests that pushing people does mean they get work.

I believe that this was the moral of the story they tried to convey.

Which is fair. What you need to live is shelter, warmth and food.

What you dont need is booze, fags, tattos which is what benefits gets spent on.

So pay for peoples accomodation, bills, and give them food stamps but zero cash.

I gave up at the point the chap said he never had enough money for food but it would have been too stressful to give up fags.

Did you see the programme?

There were two main thrusts:

1) Lots of people who had done nothing wrong were having money stopped because of various cock-ups. The money was reinstated on appeal, but this could take weeks/months.
2) Even where people were 'undeserving', it's not right to starve them.

Perhaps next time you sign on you could request food vouchers rather than JSA.
