US moves to curb invasion of aggressive Asian carp
"Chicago is ready to block its canal system to prevent Asian carp entering Lake Michigan amid fears over an invasion of the huge fish capable of knocking out a human being.
The monster fish, which is more than a yard long, is known to leap out of the water when startled by boat engines.
Up to a dozen can leap out of the water at a time.
“The fish have battered boaters, making rivers unsafe for water recreation,” warned the National Wildlife Federation, America’s largest conservation organisation.
As a precaution the Illinois Natural History Survey Station has installed netting around the steering wheels and dashboards of its fishing boats. "
