    Somebody on the radio this morning talking about "the Family Room" which I suspect is another one of those US imports.
    We had a family room although I don't know if the name is an Americanism... in a well-to-do family with a big house you often [used to] find two living rooms, one for everyone, one in which kids do not visit and in which the parents have guests.

    I grew up in a house like that - fancy sofas and special china; we also had a room called a "sun lounge" which was effectively a play-room but the only thing I can remember about the room is I did a poo on the floor once.
