If you want to piss about with Linux use any old £50 laptop. What does it do that a 10 year old laptop doesn't do?

Nothing, which was my initial issue too. However after hearing people talk about it, the idea is that you can use it for a whole host of projects. So think projects rather than pure coding... more like Lego Mindstorm.
