The fence needs to extend at least a foot underground.

That happened to a neighbour's chickens.

Version 2 of the coop had a solid floor.

Then there was the farmer who had build his coop with slats a pine marten could get through. The pine marten gorged itself so much that it was too fat to get out. Hello shotgun.

The eggs were worth the trouble though. Unlike the ones you buy in the shops they were not uniform in size, but they had beautiful golden yokes and tasted wonderful.

Mmm. Egg and cress sandwiches. Yum.

Indeed. Feed NICE little birds, foxes, squirrels etc, but stop feeding horrible people.

PS Except Jackdaws!! Anyone know how to get rid of those? Numbers have exploded here and where they used to stay in the woods now they have all started invading the gardens. Squawk, squawk all day long.

Except the sparrows that are nesting somewhere nearby. At least I think it's sparrows. Fierce non-stop chattering from 4 am to dusk*. We had too many pigeons a few years ago, but the council had a campaign to cut down their numbers and that seems to have worked.

* There was an obviously hungry cat yowling outside my kitchen window yesterday. If it had any enterprise it would surely find out where the racket is coming from and get a free dinner.
