Last week Washington called on Britain and Argentina to negotiate over the Falklands' sovereignty.
Nice to see one of our major allies backing us.

Either back us or STFU and keep out of it.

IIRC, didn't they reluctantly provide us support during the Falklands war.

I forget the details, but was it something to do with supplying us with missiles when we ran out.

              I wouldn't get too worried.
Prior to the last invasion in 1982, we were defending the island with about half a dozen Marines, on permanent light duties, armed with rolled-up copies of the Telegraph. And that was almost enough to repel the best that the Argies had at their disposal.
Defences have been beefed-up considerably since then. Some of them even have guns, and there is also, thanks to generous MOD benevolence during the NL years, 1 set of Kevlar Body Armour to go round too.
              Walk in the park!

Close. In those far off days, our heat seeking air to air misiles, could only be fired if we were behind the enemy jet.

So the idea was there would be a dogfight, and our superior planes would get on their tail and blow them up.

BUT, the harrier wasnt fast enough to get on the tail of the Argentinian skyhawk. It was great at nipping around and using the cannon, but by then , it was too late. the ships were sunk.

The Americans had the latest air to air heat seeking technology. Their sidewinders could see the enemy engines from the front - brilliant - shoot the argies down on the way in. not on the way out.
